An armed suspect arrived at the tavern in Embalenhle and allegedly drew a firearm and fired shots, killing two then left the scene only to return moments later.

The Police in Embalenhle, under the Gert Sibande District, are investigating two counts of murder following a shooting incident that occurred inside a tavern on Thursday, 01 January 2026 around 23h00.

According to a report, police were alerted by community members about a shooting at a certain tavern at Extension 15, Embalenhle, Mpumalanga. Upon arrival at the scene, Police found two male victims lying on the ground and covered with blankets, while community members were gathered outside the premises.

Both victims were later identified as residents of Embalenhle. A report further detailed that an armed suspect arrived at the tavern, allegedly drew a firearm and fired shots then left the scene only to return moments later. It was during his return when he reportedly shot both victims. It is also alleged that he randomly fired some shots as he fled the scene.

The Emergency Medical Services personnel attended to the scene and unfortunately certified both victims dead.

The suspect is said to have been wearing a white jacket. At this stage, he has not yet been arrested and the motive thereof is unknown. The two victims are known to the Police but yet to be formally identified by their next of kin.

A manhunt for the suspect has been launched by the Police and a 72-Hour Plan has been activated. Meanwhile the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, raised his concern regarding shootings in taverns whilst emphasizing that Police will work around the clock to bring the perpetrator to justice. “We continue to plead with liquor traders to ensure that they comply with safety regulations in their respective businesses. In most instances like few days back, some traders were not happy when we raided their places but our aim was and is to realize safety for everyone, ” said the General.
