Fans hoping to see Grammy-winning R&B superstar Maxwell perform in South Africa have been left heartbroken after his two highly anticipated concerts were abruptly cancelled just days before he was due to take to the stage.
The singer was scheduled to perform at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on Saturday, August 8, and at the Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town on Tuesday, August 11. However, promoter Vertex Events announced on Monday that both performances have been called off due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the artist’s control.
According to Vertex Events, Maxwell’s management informed organisers that the singer would no longer be able to travel to South Africa, despite his eagerness to return and perform for local fans.
The promoter said it worked closely with Maxwell’s team to try and save the concerts, exploring several possible solutions, including moving the dates. However, none of the options proved possible.
In a statement, Maxwell apologised to disappointed fans.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, I’m unfortunately no longer able to perform in South Africa as planned. This decision wasn’t made lightly. I sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to the shows. I appreciate your understanding and continued support. I hope to be back with you all soon.”
Vertex Events said numerous attempts were made to rearrange the concerts around Maxwell’s schedule, but the circumstances could not be changed.
The promoter stressed that neither Maxwell nor Vertex Events had breached their agreement, saying both parties remained professional throughout the process and that the decision to cancel the concerts was made only after every possible avenue had been exhausted.
Although the concerts will no longer take place this year, there is still hope for fans.
Vertex Events revealed that Maxwell and his team remain committed to returning to South Africa in 2027 and will work together to secure new dates, as the singer will not be able to perform anywhere in the country during the remainder of 2026.
The cancellation comes despite months of planning, with venues booked, production completed and logistics already in place for what organisers believed would be two sold-out shows.
“As much as the decision has been a hard one to make, Vertex Events remains transparent to share with its much-loved audiences that this has indeed been beyond anyone’s control.”
Ticket holders will receive full refunds, with Webtickets set to contact all customers directly with refund options.
While fans will have to wait a little longer to see the R&B icon live, organisers say they remain hopeful that Maxwell will return next year to finally deliver the world-class performances South African audiences have been eagerly anticipating.
