A 27-year-old Lesotho national has been arrested in connection with the deadly mass shooting at a tavern in Kanana near Orkney in the North West, where five people were killed and five others were left wounded earlier this year.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that Thabiso Sholo Potsoko was arrested following an intelligence-driven operation led by members of the Provincial Anti-Gang Investigation Unit, North West Crime Intelligence, the Sasolburg Crime Prevention Unit in the Free State, and the North West Tactical Response Team (TRT).
Potsoko is expected to face five counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder for his alleged role in the massacre that shocked the Kanana community.
According to police, the shooting took place on the night of 30 May 2026 at a tavern in Kanana Extension 10. It is alleged that a group of armed suspects stormed the establishment and opened fire indiscriminately on patrons, turning a night of entertainment into a scene of horror.
Five people died at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, while another five victims survived the attack after suffering serious injuries. Emergency services rushed the wounded to hospital for treatment.
The motive for the mass shooting has not yet been disclosed, and police investigations remain ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances that led to the attack and determine whether additional suspects were involved.
SAPS said the arrest was made after investigators followed up on intelligence gathered during the months-long investigation, leading to the successful tracing and apprehension of the suspect.
The police have described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in the case and reaffirmed their commitment to tracking down violent criminals responsible for serious and organised crimes.
Authorities have indicated that investigations are continuing and have not ruled out further arrests as detectives pursue all available leads linked to the deadly shooting.
