RUSA spokesperson Prem Barlam said the officers acted fast and calmly once they realised the woman was too far along to be moved. “When the officers arrived at the scene, they realised that they could not move the mother to rush her to hospital as she was in the advanced stages of labour.
“The officers decided to help deliver the baby safely in a dignified manner, even though it was in a public space. The mother and baby were rushed to the local hospital for further medical attention, where they are still recovering,” he said.

He added that the officers have a wide range of skills that make a real difference in the communities they serve. “This case is not isolated. We receive calls of women in labour in the bushes and in the streets, especially those on drugs and homeless, regularly,” he said. “Our officers know not to turn away any emergency calls but to assist until the matter is successfully handed over to the police or the relevant officials,” he said.
