Netflix is expanding its slate of South African original productions with the launch of Umthetho, a gripping new eight-part crime drama set to premiere exclusively on 14 August.
Produced by acclaimed production house Black Brain Pictures and directed by renowned filmmaker Mandla N, Umthetho is the South African adaptation of the hit Brazilian Netflix series Brotherhood (Irmandade), bringing a uniquely local perspective to a story of justice, family loyalty and organised crime.
At the centre of the series is Mbali, played by award-winning actress Nqobile “Nunu” Khumalo, a brilliant public prosecutor whose life is thrown into turmoil after discovering that her brother, Moses, whom she believed had died years earlier, is alive. The shocking revelation becomes even more complicated when she learns he is now the leader of a ruthless prison syndicate.
Forced to confront impossible choices, Mbali must decide whether to uphold the law she has dedicated her life to protecting or risk everything to save her family. As secrets unravel and loyalties are tested, the line between justice and survival becomes increasingly blurred.
The series boasts one of South Africa’s strongest television ensembles, featuring Tony Kgoroge as Moses alongside Sindi Dlathu, Sthembiso “SK” Khoza, Given Stuurman, Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, Molefi Monaisa, Ernest Msibi, Lungelo Madondo, Obed Baloyi and Mandla Gaduka.
Announcing the series, Netflix described Umthetho as a tense crime thriller driven by emotional conflict and difficult moral choices.
“The series follows Mbali, a talented public prosecutor whose life is turned upside down when she discovers that her brother, Moses, is still alive and leading a ruthless prison syndicate,” Netflix said. “As she is drawn deeper into his dangerous world, she must choose between her duty to the law and loyalty to her family.”
Speaking about the production, lead actress Nunu Khumalo recently said the series explores themes that will resonate with audiences beyond its crime-driven storyline.
“Umthetho explores family, justice and long-buried secrets,” she said, adding that viewers will leave asking difficult questions about the choices people make for those they love.
With its blend of high-stakes courtroom drama, prison politics and family betrayal, Umthetho is expected to be one of Netflix South Africa’s biggest local releases of the year. The eight-episode series joins the streaming giant’s growing catalogue of locally produced content, further showcasing South African storytelling to audiences around the world.
