On Tuesday, the home of Limpopo Modimolle municipality Mayor Elizabeth Lekalakala was damaged by suspected protesters.

Community members of Phagameng in Modimolle were protesting against water shortages in the area. Police spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said, “The mayor’s house was attacked with an assortment of objects at 2 am. The gate lights were smashed, the electric cable cut off and the gate dented. No arrests have been made,” She said.

Police said the residents allegedly put barricades of trees stumps, bricks, and tyres on the road causing traffic. “Rubbish bins are spilled all over the road. There were a number of groups of people at street corners.” An estimated 14 people have been arrested for barricading roads and are still in the process of being charged. “It is quiet at this stage, members of the public order policing are patrolling the area.”
