He believes he is being framed for attempted murder. ANC Youth League (ANCYL) national executive committee member Babiki Dewet has accused rival party factions in Free State of framing him. He believed this was all a bid to derail his political career after he was arrested for allegedly firing a gun at a funeral, and a mourner was shot. Dewet appeared at Koppies magistrate’s court on Monday, where he was released on bail of R1 000. He is expected to appear in court again on 5 May.

The shooting incident happened at the funeral of ANC’s Ngwathe chief whip Leponesa Sotshiva when mourners allegedly fired gunshots in the air and a bullet hit one of the grievers. Police charged Dewet with attempted murder and discharging a firearm. He has however denied any involvement and his firearms remained locked in his car at the time of the incident.

Dewet said he is being framed for political reasons. “I was at the funeral, but I did not fire shots in the air,” he said. “At the time of the shooting, my firearms (a real gun and pallette) were in the car and I was at a distance.”
