The play Dead End by Zakes Mda, a play exploring the struggles of a young South African Couple, trying to navigate city life under Apartheid.
This is the first play that Zakes Mda wrote as a schoolboy.
The play is a metaphorical discussion between a young man and God, and was first performed at the Deipkloof Hall, on 14 February 1979 by Nomhle Nkonyeni, James Mthoba, and Richard Ngamane.

The show is directed by Joburg City Theatre’s Artistic Director; Makhaola Ndebele and performed by an exceptional cast: Mncedisi Shabangu, Sanelisiwe Yekani and Khulu Sanjana.
Mncedisi Shabangu is an acclaimed actor, writer and director of South African theatre. He has appeared in national and international theatre productions such as Gomorrah, Buju, Call us Crazy, Orpheus and Euridices, Nongogo, Tshepang, Ways of Dying, The Suitcase, Cards, Dream of the Dog, Fishers of Hope, The Best Wedding Ever, Modus Vivendi, The Rivonia Trial, Woza Albert, Woyzeck, Asinamali and Marat/Sade just to name a few.
He toured extensively with the acclaimed Handspring Puppet Theatre and William Kentridge.
Sanelisiwe Yekani is a playwright and a theatre & performance lecturer, who wrote and performed in the theatre production Ndikho (2018, 2019). She also wrote a children’s play titled Zwelitsha; which is part of the ASSITEJ in the Works Playwriting Process 2020. Sanelisiwe has performed in various touring theatre productions and played the role of Cleopatra in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra (2018). She is a creative who uses different art mediums to tell local stories.
Khulu Skenjana is a South African actor who has worked on some of Mzansi’s top dramas. He is best known for his debut, an epic portrayal of ‘Tony Ngu’ in the hit film Jerusalema. He worked alongside Morgan Freeman on Invictus, starring Matt Damon. He is a diverse actor with cameo roles on the NBC drama series, The Philanthropist, and the South African / Canadian hospital drama Jozi H. This powerhouse is also a motivational speaker, a voice-over artist and a vocalist. The play allows us, as South Africans young and old, an opportunity to reflect on life, its present-day challenges, and possibilities for a better future.” said Makhaola Ndebele.
Dead End will be showcased in the Lesedi Theatre with limited performance dates and a seating capacity of 44 patrons per performance.
However, it will be filmed to be streamed on an international platform for those who cannot travel to the City of Johannesburg.
