Banyana Banyana defender Bambanani Mbane has publicly apologised for the controversial remarks she made on social media, saying she never intended to insult South African football supporters and that she allowed her emotions to get the better of her.
In a video shared on social media following the backlash, Mbane admitted her comments were inappropriate and asked supporters for forgiveness.
“I just want to apologise for the unfortunate utterances. It was never my intention to insult anyone. I was overtaken by emotions, but I sincerely apologise,” Mbane said in the video.
The apology comes a day after the South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed it had launched an internal process following Mbane’s emotional TikTok Live session, during which she lashed out at supporters who had criticised Banyana Banyana’s performances at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
During the livestream, Mbane told critics that those who did not support the national team should simply stop following them rather than constantly attacking the players. Her comments, which included strong language, quickly went viral and drew widespread criticism from football fans.
SAFA subsequently distanced itself from the remarks, saying the matter was being handled internally while apologising to supporters.
“We would like to assure the football-loving fans and Banyana Banyana supporters that the matter is being dealt with internally,” SAFA said in a statement.
The association added: “SAFA sincerely apologises for the unfortunate utterances and thanks the public for their unwavering support. With today being Match Day, the team’s immediate focus is on the WAFCON fixture against Ivory Coast. The matter will be addressed after the fixture.”
Mbane’s latest apology appears aimed at diffusing the controversy, with the experienced defender acknowledging that frustration and emotion influenced her reaction.
The defender stressed that she respects the supporters who have stood behind Banyana Banyana throughout the years and expressed regret that her comments had offended many South Africans.
The incident unfolded during South Africa’s title defence at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the reigning African champions have faced intense scrutiny following disappointing results. While the controversy has overshadowed preparations, both Mbane and SAFA have now apologised, with the football body expected to conclude its internal process once the team’s WAFCON commitments are over.
