South Africa was hit by the tragic death of singer Winnie Khumalo on 7 January 2025. The Kwaito music industry has been hit by another tragic death. Kwaito music legend, Doc Shebeleza, real name Victor Bogopane (51) after a long illness.

Doc Shebeleza’s family confirmed his passing. He passed while trying to recover from an operation he had undergone during the festive season. In June 2024, the legendary artist was reported to be hospitalised after a health scare but was discharged from hospital after brief admission. The Ebumnandini hit maker then spent the festive season at home. He was due for an operation and asked his fans to keep him in their prayers “Mzansi, please put our kwaito legend, businessman, Amaha chairperson in your good blessed prayers, who continues to assist the poorest of the poorest in our beautiful country,” family spokesperson Shakes Mavundla said. He has since passed on while at a Joburg hospital.

Doc Shebeleza’s journey into music began at an early age. Growing up in a family that valued cultural expression, he was immersed in a rich tapestry of sounds ranging from the infectious beats of kwaito to traditional South African music. His sound is a rich blend of influences that drew from various genres, including traditional South African music and hip-hop. it wasn’t long before he released his first demos, showcasing a unique sound that reflected his cultural roots. In 2000, he had his vinyl debut with “S’kumfete,” which allowed him to reach broader audiences and establish a fan base. His breakthrough came with the release of his hit album “Amantombazane,” which resonated widely and solidified his presence in the kwaito genre. With a career marked by groundbreaking achievements, including chart-topping hits like the tribute song “Doc Shebeleza” which was a tribute by Cassper Nyovest, his contributions have solidified his status as a legend in the industry.
