Meida Ramuhala, who suffered for years with a rare condition called Mandibular Ameloblastoma, can now finally live a normal life.
The tragic death of Meida after she was found murdered at her sister’s home in Ha Mudimeli village.
Police have arrested a 59-year-old man in connection with her death, which is under investigation. Ramuhala gained national attention in 2021 after undergoing surgery for a Mandibular Odontogenic Tumor, or Ameloblastoma, through the Provincial Rural Health Matters Outreach Programme.
Thanks to the Limpopo Health Department’s, Rural Health Matters Programme, Meida underwent surgery to remove a massive tumour which was growing on her face.
The tumour, which impacted Meida’s way of life, making it difficult for her to eat, drink and work was successfully removed, and now Meida has her smile back.
Limpopo MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba intervened to give Meida the life-changing surgery and together with the Collen Mashawana Foundation, Meida will have a fully furnished new home which is currently being built.
In 2022, the Collen Mashawana Foundation donated a fully furnished house to her. Ameloblastoma is a rare but aggressive tumor affecting the jaw, often requiring extensive surgery and, in some cases, reconstruction. While benign, it can distort facial structure and recur if not fully removed. Her death highlights the ongoing challenges South Africa faces with violent crime and pressures on the public healthcare system, including staff shortages and surgical backlogs.
