A long and painful chapter in actress Mona Monyane’s life has finally come to an end, with the former couple’s divorce officially finalised after six years of legal complications.
‘I’m finally free’
Actress Mona Monyane is celebrating a major personal milestone after her divorce from fellow actor Khulu Skenjana was finally finalised.
Monyane took to social media on Friday, 28 August, to announce that she was officially divorced, bringing an end to a legal battle that began when she first filed for divorce in February 2020.
“When I tell you I wept. I filed for divorce in Feb 2020 and only today, 28 August 2026, am I finally free,” Monyane said.
For the actress, the moment represented far more than the formal end of a marriage. It marked the conclusion of years of frustration, emotional strain and repeated attempts to have the relationship legally dissolved.
“We made it!!! I’m divorced!!!” she said.
A marriage that ended in 2020
Monyane and Skenjana married in 2016 after building a relationship in the South African entertainment industry. Both were established actors, with Monyane known for roles in productions including Muvhango, Skeem Saam and Kalushi, while Skenjana has appeared in a number of television and film productions.
Their marriage, however, was marked by profound personal tragedy.
The couple welcomed their first daughter, but suffered the devastating loss of their second child, Amani-Amaza Wamazulu Skenjana, who died only seven days after being born in November 2017.
Monyane has previously spoken publicly about the devastating impact of losing her baby and the grief that followed.
The actress later also experienced a miscarriage.
Against the backdrop of these personal challenges, the couple announced their separation in 2020 after four years of marriage. At the time, they described the difficulties they had faced together.
Although the relationship had ended, the legal marriage proved considerably more difficult to bring to a close.
Three attempts to end the marriage
The divorce process became a recurring chapter in Monyane’s life.
In 2024, she revealed that she had attempted to file for divorce on three occasions — in 2020, 2022 and again in 2024 — but remained legally married.
“Many of you may be shocked by this news because I told you I was divorced, I did. I was calling it out into the universe. I filed in 2020, 2022 and 2024 is my third attempt. I am still legally somebody’s wife,” she said at the time.
The prolonged process became a source of considerable emotional distress for the actress, who has spoken openly about trying to rebuild herself after the breakdown of the marriage.
She previously described healing as painful and encouraged people going through difficult circumstances to become intentional about changing their lives.
“Healing is painful,” she said in an earlier reflection. “Because at some point you have to stop waiting for someone to come save you. You have to get intentional about wanting your life to change.”
Claims surrounding the separation
As the divorce process continued, Monyane also spoke about circumstances surrounding the breakdown of the marriage.
She previously claimed that Skenjana had moved on and paid lobola for another woman while the two were still legally married.
The claims formed part of a deeply complicated separation, although the central issue for Monyane remained her desire to have the marriage legally dissolved.
Her experiences also became the subject of public discussion after she opened up about the emotional impact of the drawn-out divorce.
In 2025, she appeared on Showmax’s Untied, where she spoke candidly about heartbreak, divorce and the process of rediscovering herself. Her appearance highlighted just how deeply the prolonged separation had affected her.
‘I was failed by a system’
While celebrating the finalisation of the divorce, Monyane also raised broader concerns about women who find themselves trapped in difficult legal and relationship circumstances.
She said she had been scammed and felt failed by a system that she believed did not provide sufficient protection to women and children.
“After being scammed and being made a victim of a system that too often has no agency when it comes to the women and children who turn to it for protection, you did the unthinkable and stepped in to help!” she said, thanking Sithole NI and Associates Inc for assisting her on a pro bono basis.
She also said she hoped to use what she had learned from her own experience to help other women facing similar circumstances.
“I look forward to sharing legal guidance & information with other women who find themselves in the horrific trauma story that is a contested divorce,” she said.
A new chapter
After years of waiting, Monyane’s announcement was ultimately one of gratitude and relief.
She thanked those who supported her throughout the legal battle, including people who prayed for her and stood by her during periods of frustration and emotional turmoil.
“I am so overwhelmed with gratitude, thank you to everyone who never stopped praying for me and waiting for the day I would finally be free!!!” she said.
For Monyane, the finalisation of the divorce closes a chapter that began more than six years ago — one shaped by the end of a marriage, devastating family losses, repeated legal attempts and a lengthy journey towards healing.
Now, after years of describing herself as separated but still legally married, the actress can finally say that the marriage is officially over.
“I’m divorced!!!” she declared.
