SABC1 has announced the return of actresses Winnie Ntshaba and Jo-Anne Reyneke to Generations – The Legacy, with both stars reprising characters whose stories still have plenty of unfinished business.
Ntshaba returns as Khethiwe Buthelezi, while Reyneke steps back into the role of Refilwe, daughter of the formidable and politically connected Walter Nkaba.
Their returns are expected to bring fresh drama, complicated relationships and new twists to the popular weekday soapie.
Khethiwe is back
Ntshaba reprises her iconic role as Khethiwe Buthelezi, a character viewers first knew as a timid, naive and conservative village girl who defied expectations to become a successful and glamorous entrepreneur and the face of La Chocolata.
But Khethiwe’s return comes at a particularly difficult time in her life.
The money she received after Khaphela’s death is almost gone, while Sara has taken her child. Desperate to rebuild her life, Khethiwe turns to an old friend for help, but her plans soon begin to unravel.
Despite the setbacks, Khethiwe remains ambitious and determined to reclaim the life and status she believes she deserves. However, her confidence masks a vulnerable side that leaves her susceptible to toxic relationships and manipulation.
Under pressure, Khethiwe can also become emotionally volatile, with her darker and more self-destructive side emerging when she feels trapped or desperate.
Speaking about returning to the soapie, Ntshaba said: “Returning to Generations is more than an honour, it feels like a full-circle moment. This is the show that introduced me to television and became the foundation of a career that has allowed me to step into many different worlds and portray an incredible range of characters.”
She added: “Yet, through all those journeys, Khethiwe has always remained a very special part of me. She is a character deeply connected to my beginnings, so when I received the call that there was another chapter of her story waiting to be told, as an actor and storyteller, I simply couldn’t say no.”
Ntshaba said returning to the character had been both nostalgic and exciting.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the producers for entrusting me with Khethiwe once again and for creating the space for her story to evolve. Returning to this character has been both nostalgic and exciting and I sincerely hope viewers embrace her return and enjoy this next chapter as much as I have enjoyed stepping back into her world,” she said.
Refilwe returns with a plan
Reyneke is also making her comeback as Refilwe, the daughter of Walter Nkaba.
Refilwe’s relationship with her father has always been complicated, particularly because of his willingness to use her to further his own political ambitions. But she is far from a pushover.
Smart, charming, ruthless and ambitious, Refilwe has grown up around powerful men and knows how to navigate their world. Her experiences have also made her question whether people are interested in her for who she is or simply because of her family’s wealth and influence.
Now, she is determined to carve out her own identity.
Refilwe can move comfortably between powerful political circles, disadvantaged communities and even zama-zamas. Despite her privileged upbringing, she has a strong sense of empathy for ordinary people and the communities around them.
Reflecting on her return, Reyneke said: “Firstly I was beyond honoured to get the call from the production of Generations, that they want me back, you know those are big compliments from a production that worked with you once before, for them to call and ask you back again means they must have enjoyed what you did, but also I am praying that they missed working with me.”
More drama lies ahead
The return of Ntshaba and Reyneke brings two familiar characters back into the Generations – The Legacy fold, but neither Khethiwe nor Refilwe is returning simply to revisit the past.
Khethiwe will be fighting to rebuild her life, while Refilwe returns determined to reclaim her power and establish her own path.
Their storylines are expected to bring unexpected alliances, confrontations, complicated relationships and scandal as the characters become entangled in the latest drama.
Generations – The Legacy airs Monday to Friday at 20h30 on SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho.
