Fans of The Bala Family reality show will have to wait longer for another season after musician Zwai Bala confirmed that the popular family reality series will not return for a third season in the near future.
Zwai revealed that the Bala family had spent almost two years trying to make a third season happen, but ultimately the decision to stop the show from returning was not theirs.
The reality series follows the lives of Zwai, his siblings Loyiso, Phelo and Pinky, as well as their mother, Mama V. The show first premiered in 2023 and quickly attracted an audience interested in the family’s music, relationships, disagreements and personal lives.
‘That decision was not ours’
In a statement shared with fans, Zwai said the family had been prepared to once again allow cameras into their homes and lives.
“For close to two years, we’ve been trying to make another season of The Bala Family happen. We wanted to do it. We were ready to open our lives, our homes, our relationships and our music to you again,” he said.
He confirmed that Season 3 would not be happening in the immediate future.
“But Season 3 isn’t happening in the near future. And we want to be clear about something: That decision was not ours,” Zwai said.
The musician did not identify who made the decision or provide further details about the circumstances behind the show’s cancellation.
More than just a reality show
For the Bala family, Zwai said, the programme represented more than entertainment.
“The Bala Family has never been just a TV show. It’s our family, our history, our relationships, our music and our name,” he said.
He explained that allowing the public into their lives required a significant emotional commitment from every member of the family.
The show’s appeal has also extended beyond the television screen, with Zwai pointing to messages from viewers, online conversations and the response the family receives at their performances as evidence of the connection audiences have developed with them.
The music and family remain at the heart
While the family’s disagreements and drama have often generated conversation among viewers, Zwai said the heart of the programme has always been the Bala family’s history and musical legacy.
“The generations of talent. The music. The laughter. Disagreements. The healing. The history. And that inexplicable thing that happens when we’re all together,” he said.
The family has a long-standing connection to South Africa’s music industry, with Zwai and his siblings each having been involved in music in different capacities.
The reality show provided audiences with a more intimate view of the family beyond their careers, including their relationships and the dynamics between different generations.
Zwai apologises for keeping fans waiting
With viewers expecting an announcement about a possible third season, Zwai apologised for the uncertainty and acknowledged that the family’s previous optimism may have raised expectations.
“We’re sorry for keeping you waiting, especially when our hope may have sounded like a promise,” he said.
He thanked viewers for continuing to support the family while they attempted to bring another season to television.
“For now, we simply wanted you to hear the truth directly from us. Thank you for loving this family. And thank you for waiting,” Zwai said.
For now, there is no confirmed date for the return of The Bala Family, leaving fans without a third season in the immediate future.
