In a press conference with the media, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi claimed that the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team was orchestrated to shield politically connected members of a criminal syndicate from prosecution, assisted by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. “I can confirm before South Africans today that the investigation which these members were involved with in Gauteng has unmasked the syndicate, and this syndicate involves, amongst others, politicians who are currently serving in Parliament.” The Political Killings Task Team was formed after the 2018 assassination of ANC activist Musawenkosi “Qashana” Mchunu. By 2025, more than 600 politically related dockets, arrested 436 suspects, and recovered 156 firearms, with at least 55 of them linked to political crimes. Police Minister Mchunu issued a letter to National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola, requesting that the team be dissolved.

Shivambu’s Mayibuye Consultation Process (MCP) has expressed deep alarm and grave concern following the explosive revelations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi. “His statements implicate the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, in serious acts of interference in policing operations—most notably the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team,” the party said in a statement. “These allegations paint a deeply disturbing picture of a compromised national security apparatus, where senior political and police officials are allegedly colluding with criminal syndicates to obstruct investigations, derail justice, and protect those responsible for political assassinations. Even more alarming is the direct claim that the Minister of Police himself may be part of the secriminal networks.” In response, the Mayibuye Consultation Process makes the following urgent demands: the immediate dismissal of Minister Senzo Mchunu by President Cyril Ramaphosa, given the serious allegations that implicate him in protecting criminals and obstructing justice. Swift action by law enforcement agencies to arrest Minister Mchunu and all implicated individuals, including Lieutenant General Sibiya and Mr. Brown Mokgotsi.”
