A 39-year-old Limpopo police officer has been arrested after he allegedly gave drugs and alcohol to inmates at a Phalaborwa police station on New Year’s Eve.

According to reports, the officer has been suspended after allegedly providing marijuana and alcohol and the intoxicated inmates allegedly committed some grave crimes of raped and assault. The inmates appeared at the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court and their case was moved to 18 January.

“Six counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) and two counts of rape were opened,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo as quoted by News24.
The province’s police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, has said the charges against the cop suspect will be dealt with internally.
“What happened at Phalaborwa police station was an isolated incident, which is being internally dealt with to ensure that decisive and appropriate sanctions are ultimately meted out again the said member,” said Hadebe.
