A fire broke out at Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park on Thursday, 24 September, affecting two tourist units and prompting an immediate response from camp staff and rangers.
The blaze was contained before it could spread to surrounding infrastructure, with SANParks confirming that no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Fire contained before it could spread
According to SANParks, the fire was reported at the rest camp on Thursday.
“The camp staff members including ranger team reacted immediately and managed to contain the fire before it could spread,” SANParks said in a statement issued on Friday.
The organisation said the cause of the fire was not known at this stage and that investigations were under way.
“An update will be provided in due course,” SANParks said.
Park spokesperson Rey Thakhuli also confirmed that no additional damage to surrounding infrastructure was reported and that no injuries were sustained.
The affected units were reportedly not occupied by tourists at the time. They had been taken out of service and were undergoing renovation following damage caused by the severe January floods, according to reporting from the Lowvelder and The Detail.
Letaba still recovering from devastating floods
The fire comes as Letaba continues its recovery from the extensive damage caused by floods earlier this year.
The January floods caused major damage across parts of the Kruger National Park, with repair costs at Letaba reported to be part of a broader recovery programme estimated at close to R1 billion.
SANParks has been carrying out the repairs in phases to allow the park to continue operating while damaged infrastructure is restored.
At Letaba, 25 tourism units in Circles A to C have already been restored and reopened, together with the tented camp and day-visitor facilities. Other units and facilities remain under repair, with completion of further work targeted for later this year.
The restoration has included work on the camp’s accommodation, with some of the classic thatch-roof bungalows receiving upgrades.
Camp facilities remain operational
Despite the fire, SANParks said the incident did not disrupt the operation of the rest of the camp.
“The park shop, filling station, the elephant museum and camp reception remain operational as normal,” the organisation said.
Letaba is one of Kruger’s established rest camps and sits on the southern bank of the Letaba River in the northern-central section of the park. The camp is known for its river views, wildlife sightings and elephant-focused attractions.
SANParks describes the area as an important location for viewing elephants, while the Letaba Elephant Hall and museum are among the camp’s attractions.
Cause of fire remains a mystery
For now, authorities have not attributed the fire to any specific cause.
SANParks said an investigation is under way and that further information will be released once it becomes available.
The latest incident also comes several years after another significant fire at Letaba. In September 2020, a fire damaged a substantial portion of the camp’s shop, forcing it to close for rebuilding.
This latest blaze was contained before it spread beyond the two affected tourist units, allowing the rest of the camp’s facilities to continue operating normally.
