Orlando Pirates have confirmed the shock departure of fan favourite Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi, with the 28-year-old playmaker completing a move to Bahrain Premier League side Alkhaldiya Sports Club.
The Buccaneers announced the deal on Monday, 24 August, bringing an unexpected end to Maswanganyi’s spell in the famous black and white jersey.
The transfer comes just days after Maswanganyi was left out of Pirates’ squad for their MTN8 clash against Sekhukhune United, prompting speculation about his future. His absence had raised questions after coach Abdeslam Ouaddou indicated that the player was not injured.
Pirates explain shock exit
Pirates made it clear that Maswanganyi’s departure was not simply a decision by the club to sell an unwanted player.
Instead, the Soweto giants said the midfielder remained part of the technical team’s plans for the new season, but ultimately wanted to pursue a career opportunity outside South Africa.
“Maswanganyi remained an important part of the technical team’s plans for the season,” Pirates said.
“However, following discussions with the player and his representatives, he expressed a clear desire to pursue a new opportunity abroad.”
The club said it respected the player’s ambitions and chose not to stand in his way.
“In recognition of his service to the Club and his ambitions for the next chapter of his career, Orlando Pirates agreed not to stand in his way,” the club said.
“A transfer was subsequently concluded with Alkhaldiya Sports Club.”
A fan favourite leaves Soweto
Maswanganyi arrived at Pirates in June 2023 after returning to South Africa following an early spell playing in Portugal and a season with SuperSport United.
According to Pirates, he is a product of the Stars of Africa Football Academy and spent part of his development in Portugal, turning out for UD Oliveirense and Académica OAF before returning home ahead of the 2022/23 season.
His performances quickly established him as one of the exciting attacking players in the Pirates squad.
The club described his impact as extending beyond his performances on the pitch, saying he became a firm favourite among the Ghost.
“From his first appearance in the famous black and white jersey, he gave the Ghost countless moments to celebrate and represented this club with pride,” Pirates said.
The season that changed everything
Maswanganyi’s breakthrough at Pirates came during the 2023/24 campaign.
He enjoyed a standout first season with the Buccaneers and was rewarded at the 2024 PSL Awards, where he won three major individual honours.
He was named DStv Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, DStv Premiership Midfielder of the Season and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.
The Players’ Player award was particularly significant because it was recognition from his fellow professionals.
The PSL had previously listed Maswanganyi among the nominees alongside Ronwen Williams and Iqraam Rayners before he went on to claim the award.
His first Pirates campaign also helped cement his reputation as a creative attacking midfielder capable of contributing goals and assists.
From Portugal to the national team
Maswanganyi’s rise at club level also opened the door to international football.
He earned his first Bafana Bafana call-up in 2024 and made his senior international debut against Andorra in March that year.
He later scored his first international goal in South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Uganda in November 2024 during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
His progression from SuperSport United to Pirates and then the national team underlined just how quickly his career had developed.
A decorated Pirates spell
Maswanganyi leaves Pirates having been part of a successful era for the club.
His time in Soweto included domestic silverware, while the club’s own player profile credits him with 119 appearances, 28 goals and 18 assists for the Buccaneers.
He also leaves as a league champion, something Pirates specifically highlighted in its farewell message.
“He departs as a league champion, a firm favourite among the supporters and a player who understood the responsibility of representing Orlando Pirates Football Club,” the club said.
Alkhaldiya the next chapter
Maswanganyi now heads to Alkhaldiya Sports Club, taking his career into the Bahrain Premier League.
The move represents another international chapter for a player whose career has already taken him from South Africa to Portugal and back, before establishing himself as one of the country’s leading attacking midfielders.
Alkhaldiya finished second in last season’s Bahrain Premier League, one point behind champions Muharraq.
For Pirates, however, the timing of the move makes the transfer particularly significant.
Maswanganyi was still viewed as part of the plans for the new campaign, and his departure comes as the Buccaneers compete across domestic competitions and prepare for their continental commitments.
Tito says goodbye to the Ghost
While Pirates have publicly confirmed that Maswanganyi wanted the opportunity abroad, no separate public statement from the player or Alkhaldiya accompanying the transfer announcement was available at the time of publication.
The club, meanwhile, ended its announcement by thanking the midfielder for his service and wishing him success in Bahrain.
For the Ghost, the departure marks the end of a memorable chapter for a player who arrived from SuperSport United, became a PSL award winner, helped deliver silverware and ultimately grew into one of the most recognisable fan favourites at Orlando Pirates.
Tito is now off to Bahrain – but his legacy at Pirates has already been secured.
