Former Generations actress Thahira Syed has opened up about one of the most difficult chapters of her life, revealing that she is battling multiple serious health conditions and is appealing to the public for financial assistance as she navigates her treatment and recovery.
Syed, best known for playing Shaan Naidoo-Maistry on Generations between 1998 and 2004, has revealed that she has been fighting Stage 3 breast cancer, Stage 3 renal failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
The actress has undergone chemotherapy, surgery and radiation as part of her cancer treatment, but says her health challenges have continued to place enormous physical, emotional, spiritual and financial pressure on her.
“Over the past few years, I have been engaged in a fight for my life after being diagnosed with an aggressive Stage 3 breast cancer (treated to date with chemotherapy, surgery and radiation), Stage 3 renal failure, and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease),” Syed said in her appeal.
“Each condition on its own is devastating – but together, every ounce of my strength has been tested.”
Syed’s situation has become increasingly difficult following a deterioration in her renal prognosis. She is currently not working and describes herself as a freelance contractor, leaving her facing mounting medical and everyday living costs while trying to focus on her recovery.
Her fundraising campaign, hosted on BackaBuddy, has set a target of R500 000. The funds are intended to assist with medical aid contributions and other medical expenses, as well as transport, food and living costs.
The campaign also notes that Syed suffered a broken wrist last year, with the slow healing process further setting back her recovery.
“I am reaching out to all of you during what has been, and continues to be, one of the most challenging and transformative chapters of my life – physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially,” she said.
“I am currently not working (I am a freelance contractor), and my renal prognosis has recently deteriorated significantly. I am now having to urgently navigate the various moving parts of my treatment and care.”
Despite the seriousness of her circumstances, Syed has approached the public with humility, asking for support as she continues to deal with the realities of her illness.
“I therefore humbly ask for your assistance at this time. I am deeply grateful in advance for any support you can offer,” she said.
As of 11 August 2026, the campaign had raised R71 108 towards its R500 000 target from 60 donors.
Syed became a familiar face to South African television audiences during her years on Generations, where she portrayed Shaan Naidoo-Maistry as part of the prominent Maistry family storyline. She later appeared on e.tv’s Backstage as Naomi Singh, an acting coach at Vulindlela College.
While she subsequently moved away from the entertainment spotlight and pursued a corporate career, her current health battle has brought her story back into the public eye.
For Syed, the appeal is not simply about raising money but about being able to continue accessing the care and support she needs during an extraordinarily challenging period of her life.
“Every contribution, big or small, will go directly towards” helping her navigate the medical and financial pressures associated with her recovery, according to the fundraising campaign.
