South Africans have rallied behind Kwaito legend L’vovo Derrango, raising more than R160,000 through direct deposits into his personal bank account after the musician shared the heartbreaking story of his battle to survive a near-fatal stroke.

The outpouring of support followed L’vovo’s emotional interview on Gagasi FM with Linda Sibiya and a moving appearance at Bishop Dube’s eThekwini Community Church, where he publicly opened up for the first time about the devastating health crisis that changed his life forever.

Born Thokozani Ndlovu, the award-winning musician revealed how he collapsed on stage while performing, was rushed to hospital, and spent weeks fighting for his life in intensive care. The stroke left him unable to work, stripped him of his independence, and forced him to face severe financial hardship as music bookings came to a halt.

“I suffered financially because I wasn’t working or receiving any bookings. I had to move back home. I was scared to go outside and be seen by people. My real friends would come, cook for me and took care of me. I received words of support. I also lost many people,” he said.

He also revealed that the stroke affected his ability to speak and sing.

“I was unable to speak properly or project my voice, so making music simply wasn’t an option. There were moments when everything felt uncertain, but I refused to give up. Healing and recovery begin in the mind. Once you decide that you’re going to fight, your body follows.”

His honesty resonated with thousands of South Africans, many of whom responded not only with messages of encouragement but also with financial assistance to help fund his ongoing recovery.

In a heartfelt statement, L’vovo thanked everyone who had reached out with prayers, words of encouragement and donations.

“To everyone who has reached out with messages of love, prayers, words of encouragement, and support after my interview on Gagasi FM with Linda Sibiya and my visit to Bishop Dube’s eThekwini Community Church, thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said.

“The kindness you have shown me has been overwhelming. There were moments in my journey when I felt uncertain about what tomorrow would look like, but your support has reminded me that God places people in our lives to lift us up when we need it most.”

The musician confirmed that every donation he has received will be used to support his rehabilitation.

“I have also received donations from many people who simply wanted to help. I want to assure everyone that every contribution will go directly toward my physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and recovery. Every donation, no matter the amount, is helping me take another step toward healing, and for that, I will remain forever grateful.”

L’vovo believes surviving the stroke gave him a second chance at life and a new purpose beyond music.

“Surviving my stroke has changed the way I look at life. It has taught me that my story is bigger than music alone. While I am excited to return to doing what I love, I now understand that God has given me a greater purpose. This is not just a comeback, it is a new beginning, a redirection towards using my journey to inspire hope, encourage resilience and remind people that no situation is beyond God’s grace.”

The Kwaito star said he hopes his experience will encourage others facing adversity to never lose hope.

“If my story can help even one person choose faith over fear, hope over despair, or perseverance over giving up, then every challenge I have faced will have served a greater purpose.”

He ended his message by expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received as he continues his recovery.

“Thank you for allowing me to share my story. This is only the beginning of something much bigger. I am healing. I am growing. I am walking into a new chapter with gratitude, purpose, and a heart that wants to serve others.”

More than a return to music, L’vovo says this chapter of his life is about embracing a new calling — using his journey of survival, resilience and faith to inspire others and prove that even the darkest moments can lead to a new beginning.
