South African football has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams. The talented footballer, who had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, died on Saturday at the age of 25.

At the time of publication, the cause of Adams’ death had not been made public. Mamelodi Sundowns had yet to release an official statement, while the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) confirmed the heartbreaking news and led tributes to the midfielder.

In a statement, SAFPU described Adams’ passing as “an immeasurable loss” to his family, teammates, clubs and the country.

“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.”

The union added:

“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The news comes just weeks after Adams featured for Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana side at the FIFA World Cup, where South Africa reached the Round of 32 before being eliminated 1-0 by Canada. Adams played in all three of Bafana’s group-stage matches, helping the national team make history with its first-ever progression to the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup.

Following the tournament, Adams and several of his Mamelodi Sundowns teammates who had participated in the World Cup were granted additional leave before reporting back for the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria. He was expected to rejoin the squad next week.

Born in Cape Town on 5 May 2001, Adams rose through the youth ranks at Stellenbosch FC, becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. He made his senior debut in 2020 and quickly established himself as one of the country’s brightest midfield talents thanks to his composure on the ball, vision and versatility.

His performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he continued to flourish, winning major honours and cementing his place in the Bafana Bafana squad. On the international stage, Adams played a key role in South Africa’s successful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, scoring important goals against Lesotho and Benin before representing the country at the global showpiece.

Adams’ death has made the tragedy even more painful given the difficult personal period he had recently endured. During the World Cup, he continued to represent South Africa despite the death of his grandmother on the eve of one of the team’s group-stage matches, earning widespread admiration for his professionalism and resilience.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football fraternity, with teammates, supporters and football organisations remembering Adams as not only an exceptional footballer but also a humble young man whose career appeared destined for even greater heights.

Further details regarding the circumstances of his death and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and club in due course.
