South African rugby is mourning the heartbreaking loss of rising star Luqobo “Bibo” Makwedini, who has died at the age of 20 after collapsing during a training session in France.

Makwedini, a promising tighthead prop who recently joined French Pro D2 side AS Béziers Hérault, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during training at the Stade de la Gayonne on Friday. He was rushed to hospital but tragically could not be saved. French club Béziers confirmed his death in an official statement, saying the young South African “passed away after suffering a medical emergency during training.”

The club paid an emotional tribute to the talented front-rower, describing him as a player with immense potential whose smile, kindness and commitment had already left a lasting impression on teammates and coaches.

“The entire AS Béziers Hérault family is in mourning and extends its deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, teammates and everyone who knew him during this incredibly difficult time,” the club said.

Makwedini first caught the attention of South African rugby fans while attending Wynberg Boys’ High School in Cape Town, where he became known both for his powerful performances on the field and his infectious personality. He later represented South Africa at Under-18 level before earning an opportunity to further his career in France.

According to reports from France and South Africa, the 20-year-old collapsed shortly after training before medical personnel responded. Despite being transported to hospital, he later died. While early reports indicate he suffered a cardiac arrest, the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.

Tributes have poured in from across the rugby community, with former teammates, supporters and clubs remembering Makwedini as a humble, hard-working player who had a bright future ahead of him. Many described him as an inspiration whose journey from school rugby in South Africa to professional rugby in Europe was only just beginning.

His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through both the South African and French rugby communities, with fans expressing their condolences to his family and loved ones as they come to terms with the tragic loss of one of the country’s brightest young rugby prospects.
