Detroit hip-hop legends Slum Village are set to bring their influential sound and celebrated legacy to Johannesburg when they perform at the Back to the City International Festival on 10 October 2026.
The festival has announced the addition of the iconic group to its 2026 line-up, adding another major international name to an event that has become a significant fixture on South Africa’s hip-hop calendar.
From Detroit to the world
Slum Village emerged from Detroit’s Conant Gardens neighbourhood in the early 1990s, founded by T3, Baatin and the late J Dilla, who went on to become one of the most revered producers in hip-hop.
The group became closely associated with Detroit’s distinctive hip-hop sound, blending intricate lyricism with soulful, sample-driven production. Their music has influenced generations of rappers and producers, while their Detroit roots have remained central to their identity.
Following changes to the group’s line-up over the years, T3 and Young RJ have continued the Slum Village legacy, maintaining the group’s presence while introducing their music to new generations of listeners.
Their catalogue includes acclaimed projects such as Trinity, Detroit Deli, Villa Manifesto and YES, as well as standout tracks including “Tainted” and “Selfish”, the latter featuring Kanye West and John Legend.
A legacy that continues
Slum Village’s influence has extended well beyond their original Detroit base, with their music helping shape the sound of alternative and soulful hip-hop internationally.
The group has also continued releasing new material. Their more recent album F.U.N. features collaborations with artists including Cordae, Larry June, Elijah Fox and Eric Roberson, while recent releases such as “Request”, “Factor” and “Superb” demonstrate that the group remains active and creatively engaged.
