Vocalist Lindokuhle “Mlindo” Mgedezi has officially parted ways with DJ and producer DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, and not renewed his contract.
Currently, the AmaBlesser singer is an independent artist not committed to any record label. Mlindo signed to Maphorisa’s company BlaqBoy Music after discovering him on social media. When DJ Maphorisa, whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, heard him sing in a video that went viral on the internet, he was blown away. He went to the ends of the world to try to track him down, so he could record music with him. DJ Maphorisa helped Mlindo record his first project under his record label and helped to build his brand.
The two fell off due to alleged exploitation. DJ Maphorisa accused Mlindo of double-crossing him with his road manager, Nyiko Bilankulu.
“It’s so crazy how people will backstab you. Mlindo the Vocalist came to Jozi. He didn’t know anyone, and I had to get him a road manager. Cool. I asked Nyiko to help Mlindo,” he said.
“At that time, Nyiko was super broke but a cool, hard-working guy, so I gave him a chance, not knowing the devil,” Mamphorisa said.
The two were not on speaking terms for over a year due to the altercation.
In 2023, they mended his broken relationship and continued to work together for Mlindo to complete his contractual agreement.
“We are good now. It was just a misunderstanding between my manager and him,” Mlindo said at the time.
“It had nothing to do with exploitation as everyone made it out to be. We sat down, had a chat, and cleared the air. We were in the studio three days ago working on the deluxe version of his album Lindokuhle, released in 2022.”
According to an insider, Mlindo’s contract with Maphorisa has come to an end, and he opted not to renew.
“He chose not to renew the contract. I think it’s long overdue that they end things. A lot has happened. But at least it ended well; they had made peace.”
Mlindo confirmed to Buzz Life News that the contract had ended.
