Newzroom Afrika anchor Aldrin Sampear has been charged with assault following a road rage incident that happened in Randburg, North of Johannesburg a day before Good Friday.
The alleged victim, Laricia Augusto (20) said she was traveling on Jan Smuts Avenue on her way to University when the incident happened. She was driving in the left lane and he was behind. “As it tends to happen with Joburg traffic, a taxi up ahead slammed on brakes in front of me,” she said. “So I indicated and moved over into the right lane”,” she said, adding that in her judgment Sampear was far enough behind her for it to be safe. “Or so I thought.”
However, the radio and TV host who was behind her lost his cool. “He glued himself to my bumper, hooting aggressively,” she said. ” I had no idea what his issue was, but to avoid any drama, I moved back into the left lane to let him pass. That’s when things turned nasty. He then swerved into the left-hand lane.” The University student says he nearly drove into her by swerving left. “I veered left to avoid him, thinking it was just some reckless driving but then he did it again, this time deliberately clipping the right rear side of my car. I nearly lost control but managed to stabilise.”
After the back and forth, they both got out of their cars, and he was already yelling. “I tried to explain myself, he was already yelling and said he needed to rush to a meeting.” Sampear did not deny the allegations but said he did not assault the woman.
In 2020 Sampear about a history of abuse, where his mom, “provoked his stepfather and he would hit her.” This possibly led to him being physical with two his his ex-partners who were women when he was in his teens, and another later. But he had outgrown the violent streak.
