Limpopo Boy, real name Matome Robert Mahlatse Thoka, is facing a major reputational storm after a private video linked to the internationally recognised dancer and choreographer was circulated online without his consent.
The development has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with his management confirming that the footage was obtained and distributed without authorisation and is being treated as a serious privacy violation and criminal matter.
In a statement dated 9 August, Limpopo Boy’s management said, “We are aware of the unauthorized and malicious distribution of private video content linked to Limpopo Boy – Robert Matome Thoka. This content was stolen without consent and shared entirely without authorization. This is a severe violation of privacy and a criminal matter.”
The statement comes amid mounting fallout over a private video involving Limpopo Boy and Matshidiso Matilda, a well-known socialite who is frequently seen dancing and socialising at popular nightclubs. Matilda is married, with evidence of her lobola celebrations and marriage publicly documented on social media. Her husband has also regularly posted her on his social media platforms, frequently sharing photographs and messages about their relationship.
The incident reportedly happened after the Lekompo Balcony Mix event, where Limpopo Boy and Matilda allegedly crossed paths. The private footage subsequently surfaced on his Instagram stories and went viral.
The dancer’s management has urged the public not to download, share or interact with the material, warning that further distribution could cause additional harm.
“We request that the public to assist by refraining from sharing, downloading, or interacting with these links, as distributing this material is unlawful and causes further harm,” the statement reads.
Management said cybersecurity experts were being brought in to establish how the private material was obtained and distributed, while legal teams were engaging hosting platforms to have the links and files removed.
The controversy threatens to overshadow the career of one of Limpopo’s most recognisable dance exports. Limpopo Boy has built a name for himself as a dancer, choreographer and performer, working with some of South Africa’s biggest music stars and taking his dance craft onto international stages. He was previously selected for the Red Bull Dance Your Style tour. He has also worked closely with artists including Makhadzi and has been associated with major dance platforms and performances. In 2025, Limpopo provincial authorities described him as a “world-renowned dancer and choreographer” who inspires young people across the globe.
The latest controversy therefore comes at a particularly damaging time for a performer whose public profile and commercial partnerships depend heavily on his reputation.
A friend close to the dancer revealed to Buzz Life News that Limpopo Boy has already lost two sponsorship opportunities in the wake of the scandal, while other potential partners are reportedly assessing the situation and waiting for investigations to establish exactly what happened.
“He is embarrassed and regretful about the entire thing and regrets taking the video,” the source said.
“All his enemies are laughing. He messed up big time. He knows how the video was leaked but he needs to get proof . But as it stands, he is in real trouble.”
Importantly, Limpopo Boy’s management has not confirmed that he has lost specific sponsorships. Instead, the team has focused its response on the alleged theft and unauthorised distribution of the private material.
The management statement also makes clear that it does not intend to engage further publicly for now.
“No further comments will be made at this time to protect the integrity of our Artist. Therefore, your support and understanding would be greatly appreciated,” the statement said.
Limpopo Boy’s rise has been a remarkable one. He grew up in Botlokwa, Limpopo, and began dancing through his school cultural group before pursuing the profession more seriously. He later moved to Pretoria and built his career through performances, choreography and collaborations with established artists.
His career has not been without controversy. In 2023, he made headlines after opening a fraud case amid allegations surrounding a woman and an incident in which he was accused of facilitating a rape. He denied wrongdoing, and the matter was reported as an allegation rather than a finding of guilt.
More recently, he has also remained active in youth development and dance education, including work with CPC Stars, where he has described his role as involving marketing, media training and choreography.
For now, the latest controversy has shifted attention away from his work and onto a private video that his management insists was never authorised for public consumption.
Rather than continuing to circulate the footage, his management is calling on the public to allow cybersecurity and legal experts to investigate how it was obtained and distributed.
