Durban Kwaito star Professor, whose real name is Mkhonzeni Langa, is officially off the market after quietly marrying his longtime partner, Matha Nzama, in a private traditional wedding ceremony held over the weekend at his home in Ezingolweni, KwaZulu-Natal.
The award-winning musician, best known for hits including Jezebel, Lento and Imoto, kept the ceremony under wraps, inviting only close family members and friends. However, despite the wedding being planned as an intimate affair, scores of community members gathered to witness the beloved star celebrate one of the biggest milestones of his life.
According to reports, the ceremony followed traditional customs, with the local headman, Sfiso Cele, asking both the bride and groom to publicly confirm that they were entering the marriage willingly.
Professor verbally declared his love before breaking into a celebratory dance – a traditional gesture signifying that he was marrying of his own free will. Bride Matha Nzama also confirmed her commitment by presenting the headman with a traditional mat before dancing, signalling that she too was entering the union willingly.
Although approached for comment, Professor declined to speak publicly about the wedding. However, sources close to the couple told local media that the pair have known each other since their high school days and have maintained a long-standing relationship away from the spotlight.
The celebrations were attended by several familiar faces from the music industry, including Professor’s brothers, fellow musicians Character and DJ Mngani, as well as artists Malini and Madanone, who joined family and friends in celebrating the couple’s special day.
Fans have praised the Kwaito pioneer for choosing to celebrate his marriage in his rural hometown, saying the decision honoured his roots and cultural traditions.
Born in Port Shepstone and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Professor rose to fame as one half of the Durban Kwaito duo Tzozo & Professor before launching a hugely successful solo career under Kalawa Jazmee Records. Over the years, he has become one of South Africa’s most celebrated Kwaito artists, winning multiple Metro FM Music Awards and producing chart-topping hits that helped shape Durban’s unique Kwaito sound.
With his wedding now marking a new chapter in his personal life, fans across Mzansi have flooded social media with congratulatory messages, wishing the veteran musician and his new bride a lifetime of happiness.
