A businessman (49) running a security company in the Sekhukhune District has been arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms.

The members of the Sekhukhune District Tracking and Investigation Team, operating under Dennilton SAPS acted on information about the suspect. They proceeded to his residence in Slovo Section, Dennilton. A search of the property resulted in the discovery of nine firearms, including three rifles, secured inside a safe. No ammunition was found.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the firearms belonged to a liquidated security company based in Sandton, Gauteng Province, and were previously leased to the suspect. The suspect has been charged with contravention of Section 3, read with Section 120(1)(a), of the Firearms Control Act for possession of unlicensed firearms.

The 49-year-old suspect is expected to appear at Moutse Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the community for providing the information and swift action of the tracking team.

“Removing unlicensed firearms from our communities remains a top priority. SAPS urges all firearm owners to ensure they comply strictly with the Firearms Control Act and follow the correct procedures for licensing and possession. Failure to do so will result in swift and decisive action,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

Members of the public are urged to continue reporting information that may assist SAPS in combating crime.
