The Black Coffee Foundation owned by Nkosinathi “DJ Back Cofee” Maphumulo sent out a call to action for donations towards theMthatha families affected by the recent floods. The death toll in the province has risen to 78 and could increase further as search and rescue operations are continuing, Reuters reported on Thursday night.

The foundation has since raised R500 000 donated by entities including Unilever, Hollywoodbets Nando’s, Sompire, and individuals. “From the bottom of our hearts- thank you. Your kindness helped us raise R500 000 for families affected by the floods in Mthatha. We couldn’t have done it without you. Please continue to support — every contribution still makes a difference,” they said in a statement. “Yesterday we walked with Mthatha again. Starting in Link, ending in Trako, Slovo – we brought essentials and left with stories that remind us why this matters. The impact of the floods hasn’t faded. Neither should the support.
President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the area affected by floods and attended a briefing by officials from the National Disaster Management Center where a school bus was washed away by flooding. Six students, the bus driver, and another adult on board were confirmed dead, while four other schoolchildren were among the missing. The head of the provincial government said that the rescue effort was “paralyzed” in the first few hours of the floods, because of a lack of resources like specialized search and rescue teams, divers, and K-9 dog units in one of the country’s poorest regions. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said that the province of 7.2 million people has just one official rescue helicopter, which had to be brought from another city more than 500 kilometers (310 miles) away.
