The Ndlovu family is mourning the death of Owen Ndlovu after he was found with gunshot wounds in Thokoza, Katlehong, on Wednesday morning, 16 September 2026, following a reported kidnapping the previous evening.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the family confirmed that Owen had been reported missing after he was allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday evening. His body was later discovered by residents, who alerted the family to the devastating news.
According to the family, residents who found Owen reported that he had sustained gunshot wounds. His bag was also discovered a few metres from where his body was found.
The family said Owen’s wife, Portia Ndlovu, subsequently went to the mortuary and identified his body.
Family awaits answers
The circumstances surrounding Owen’s death remain unclear, with the family saying it is waiting for further information from the relevant authorities.
“The family was informed of his death by those who found him, and the news was subsequently confirmed by Eugene Mthethwa,” the Ndlovu family said.
“At this stage, the family is awaiting further information from the relevant authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding Owen’s death.”
The family has not publicly disclosed further details about what happened between the time Owen was allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday evening and when his body was found the following morning.
The case comes against the backdrop of continuing concerns over violent crime and kidnappings in Gauteng, where families are often left searching for answers when loved ones disappear.
A family grieving a sudden loss
For the Ndlovu family, the focus is now on mourning Owen and seeking clarity about the circumstances that led to his death.
The family described the loss as “devastating” and appealed to the public and media to allow them space as they come to terms with what happened.
“The family appeals to the public and the media to respect its privacy as it comes to terms with this devastating loss,” the statement said.
Owen’s death has also brought to an end an anxious search that began after he was reported missing. Residents played a role in locating him, while members of the public shared information and made enquiries during the search.
The family expressed particular gratitude to those who helped.
“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the residents who found Owen and to everyone who assisted in the search for him,” the family said.
“We also thank members of the public who shared information, made enquiries, offered support and stood with the family during the search.”
The family also acknowledged the South African Police Service and others who assisted with efforts to locate Owen.
