The ratings for the first isiXhosa TV drama have been on a downward trajectory since season one. Although Multichoice has not made the big announcement on the show’s season three not being renewed, staff have confirmed that Ggeberha: The Empire has been canned.

Two actors on the show confirm that Gqeberha: The Empire will not be returning for the season there and will be replaced by a new telenovela titled Genesis. “We don’t know much about the show as yet, but it’s already in the pre-production stages,” the source says. “The reason the channel has not confirmed anything is because they still need to inform all the actors, and that has not happened. But we all know, the show did not do well and it will not be coming back. There has been a lot of controversy behind the scenes and it’s time it comes to an end and we start on a clean slate,” he adds.

Another actor says, “There has been a lot of chopping and changing, hiring and firing of actors and staff quitting. It was never smooth sailing from the start. We hope next time, the production company does better, isiXhosa actors are not respected in this industry, to be honest, and are treated badly, that is a topic that we need to discuss on another day.” A staff member on the show, shared an image on social media with the crew members of the show, captioned, “The end of an era with the most perfect team.”
