Bail has been denied for musician Shebeshxt following his appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
Lekompo artist Lehlogonolo Chauke, popularly known by his stage name Shebeshxt, appeared at the Polokwane Magistrates Court in Polokwane, Limpopo, for an urgent bail application.
His bail application was denied on the grounds that there was a likelihood that he might commit similar offences, as he allegedly committed most of them during his music performances. He remains in custody.
In her judgment, Acting Judge AJ Burnett noted that Schedule 6 bail applications are difficult and that the burden of proof required of accused persons must be taken seriously and respected.
“The appellant has simply not met the challenge of proving exceptional circumstances. I accordingly find that the learned magistrate did exercise his discretion correctly,” she concluded.
Some of the offences were allegedly committed while he was out on bail.
Shebeshxt was arrested in November for nine charges, including three attempted murders.
In one of the incidents, he allegedly shot and wounded a fan in Ladanna, Polokwane, in October last year.
Some of the charges he is facing were consolidated from previous charges from Lebowakgomo, Seshego, and Mankweng magistrate courts.
His matter is scheduled to be heard at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on February 18.
