A 15-year jail sentence was handed down to Phumile ‘Boom’ Sampson (30) for rape and an additional two years for housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery by the Addo Regional Court today, 27 November 2025.

Addo is located just an hour’s drive from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. The court convicted and sentenced Sampson, following the evidence that was led during court proceedings. The court heard that on Sunday, 07 March 2021, Sampson kicked open the lounge door, and stormed inside the house of the victim in Addo.

Sampson strangled the elderly woman (who was 60 years old), and robbed her of R300 cash. The victim, who was alone at the time tried to fend off the attack, but was overpowered and further dragged to the couch, where she was raped.

The acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso welcomed the imprisonment sentence .

“This sentence comes at the time when gender-based violence (GBV) has been formally declared a national disaster,” she said.

“This declaration necessitates that all stakeholders to heighten their efforts, and actions in responding to end this disaster.”
