South African jazz icon and trumpeter Feya Faku dies while touring Switzerland.
Dubbed as the ‘Gentle giant of African Jazz music,’ Faku’s brother, Nceba Faku confirmed he died in his sleep on Tuesday night while on tour in Switzerland.

Faku was an internationally acclaim artist, winning multiple awards, and collaborated with artists including Bheki Mseleku, Zim Ngqawana, Zim, and Abdullah Ibrahim. Radio broadcaster Nothemba Modumo said, “A defining memory for me was that performance. He would talk about how the trumpet he was playing he was gifted by Hugh Masekela when his old instrument was stolen… I have a beautiful memory of how happy he was and also how healthy he was.” DJ Black Coffee said, “RIP gentle giant”

Tributes have not stopped pouring in for the legend, Gqeberha-born legend. Action SA president Herman Mashaba sent his condolences, saying, “South Africans like Faku, the same as the many sportsmen and women who unite us in so many ways when tensions seem high, reminding us to focus on what brings us together instead of what keeps us apart, are shining lights we should continue to invest in and to celebrate,” the party said. “We hope that the legacy Faku leaves behind will serve as a lasting reminder of the pact we agreed on, at the dawn of our democracy, to always build together, no matter the odds.” The Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture as it’s mourning the passing of one of South Africa’s most cherished sons of the soil — the legendary trumpeter Fezile “Feya” Faku. “As the DSRAC, we salute Mr Feya Faku’s lifelong contribution to the cultural heritage of South Africa. The Eastern Cape, known for producing giants in the arts and struggle, has lost a musical voice that echoed with authenticity, integrity, and pride.”.
