The investigation into the murder of Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo has taken a new turn following the arrest of three men linked to the alleged theft and resale of her smartwatch, with two accused granted bail and a Nigerian national remaining in custody.
The three men appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 October 2026, facing charges relating to the alleged theft, possession and disposal of the 38-year-old runner’s Garmin smartwatch, as well as money laundering.
However, none of the three has been charged with Moselakgomo’s murder, and the investigation into her killing remains ongoing.
Two accused granted bail
The accused are Kenneth Chibuzor, Stephen Mahlakwane Sekhukhune and Danial Anthony Moat.
Sekhukhune and Moat were each granted bail of R10,000 after the state did not oppose their release. The court ordered both men to surrender their passports and report to the Kempton Park police station every Monday and Friday as part of their bail conditions.
The two had initially offered lower amounts – Sekhukhune proposed R500, while Moat offered R3,000 – but the magistrate set bail at R10,000 for each.
Chibuzor, a Nigerian national who operates a second-hand goods shop in Kempton Park, remains in custody after his bail application was postponed to 19 October.
The postponement followed concerns over his immigration status, which the court ordered authorities to verify after conflicting information emerged from documents provided to police. <escape></escape>
How the smartwatch allegedly changed hands
According to the state, Moselakgomo’s smartwatch was acquired less than 24 hours after she was last seen alive on 9 September.
The runner’s body was discovered in bushes in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, on 12 September, three days after she went missing while out for a run.
National Prosecuting Authority regional communications officer Magaboke Mohlatlole said Chibuzor allegedly bought the smartwatch from an unidentified individual for R900 on 10 September.
“The state alleges that Chibuzor, who operated a second-hand goods shop in Kempton Park, acquired the smartwatch for R900 from an unidentified individual without obtaining and recording the required identification details and transaction particulars as prescribed by law,” Mohlatlole said.
The state further alleges that Chibuzor subsequently sold the device to Sekhukhune.
Sekhukhune allegedly registered the smartwatch to his Gmail account on the same day, after Moselakgomo’s profile information and settings had been erased. He is then alleged to have sold it to Moat for R4,000.
Moat allegedly advertised the device on social media before selling it to a fourth individual for the same amount.
The fourth individual has not been charged, with the NPA indicating that there was insufficient evidence linking the person to the alleged offences. <escape></escape>
Charges facing the three men
Chibuzor faces charges relating to alleged contraventions of the Second-Hand Goods Act, money laundering and theft. Alternative charges relate to possession of goods reasonably suspected to have been stolen or receiving stolen property without reasonable cause to believe the seller was entitled to dispose of it.
Sekhukhune and Moat face charges of money laundering and theft, alternatively possession of or receiving stolen property.
The allegations centre on the acquisition and subsequent transactions involving Moselakgomo’s smartwatch. The charges do not, on their own, establish that any of the accused was involved in her death.
Murder investigation continues
Moselakgomo’s killing sparked widespread concern over women’s safety, particularly after a series of women’s bodies were discovered in different parts of Ekurhuleni in recent months.
The arrest of the three men represents a development in tracing property allegedly belonging to the slain runner. However, questions remain about who killed Moselakgomo and whether evidence uncovered during the smartwatch investigation will lead police to further suspects.
For now, the three accused remain before the courts in connection with the alleged handling and resale of the device, while Chibuzor is expected to return to the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on 19 October for his bail application.
The investigation into Moselakgomo’s murder continues.
