Nkosazana Daughter celebrated the launch of her latest single, “Kasi Lam”, in true kasi style, with a party packed with music stars, nostalgia and plenty of personality.
The celebration brought together some of Mzansi’s biggest names, including Lady Du, Soulful G, Tsekeleke and Black Cat, Sfiso Ndlovu, Thakgi Ledwaba and DJ Airburn Sounds.
Hosted by Jessica Mashaba, the event gave guests an opportunity to hear from the artists behind the song and get a glimpse into the inspiration behind the collaboration.
Kasi Vice comes to life
The theme was Kasi, denim and white and guests certainly understood the assignment.
A spaza shop installation welcomed partygoers at the entrance, while the venue was transformed into a colourful celebration of kasi culture. Guests also dressed for the occasion, turning the launch into a fashion parade of township-inspired looks.
With the music pumping and familiar faces filling the room, the atmosphere felt less like a traditional single launch and more like a proper kasi celebration.
At the heart of it all was “Kasi Lam”, Nkosazana Daughter’s collaboration with Focalistic, Da Muziqal Chef and Mlooda.
‘The chemistry gelled’
For Nkosazana Daughter, working with Focalistic was something she had wanted to do for some time.
“I have always wanted to work with Foca, and this song was the perfect fit. He then brought in the other guys, and the chemistry gelled,” she said.
The collaboration brings together the distinct styles of the four artists, creating a track that feels rooted in South African dance music while carrying a nostalgic edge.
Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa were the inspiration
While “Kasi Lam” is firmly rooted in the sound and energy of a new generation, Nkosazana Daughter says she deliberately wanted to channel the spirit of two legendary women in South African music – Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa.
“I wanted the song to have an old-school Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa feel,” she said.
“It was ahead of my time. I was born in the 2000s, but my mom used to love Brenda and Lebo. I never got to see them, but I enjoyed them through my mother’s love, and I wanted to bring the same energy to this song.”
For Nkosazana Daughter, that connection to the two icons is personal. Her appreciation of their music was shaped by her mother, allowing her to experience their influence even though she was born years after their biggest moments.
Rather than simply recreating their sound, she wanted to capture the attitude, energy and unapologetic spirit they represented.
A celebration of kasi culture
The “Kasi Lam” launch brought together generations and different corners of South African music, reflecting the same cultural melting pot found in the song itself.
From veteran acts and established stars to the newer generation, the guest list reflected the enduring influence of kasi culture on South African music.
With Focalistic, Da Muziqal Chef and Mlooda alongside Nkosazana Daughter, “Kasi Lam” is positioned as a meeting point between the old and the new – a song inspired by the sounds that came before while firmly belonging to today’s generation.
And judging by the launch, Nkosazana Daughter is more than ready to take that energy beyond the party.
