Actress Nandi Mbatha has opened up about a deeply painful period of her life, revealing that behind the success, opportunities and public attention was a private battle with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

The Isithembiso and Savage Beauty actress recently shared her story in a candid testimony, revealing that she battled with her mental health for almost two years and made several attempts to end her life.

Her revelation has offered a sobering reminder that a person’s public success does not always reflect what they are experiencing privately.

From rising star to a hidden battle

Mbatha became a familiar face to South African television audiences through her role as Simlindile “Simi” Ngema in the Mzansi Magic telenovela Isithembiso.

The role marked her first credited television acting role and helped establish her as one of the young performers to watch. She later expanded her television career, including appearing as Ruby in the Netflix drama Savage Beauty.

On the outside, her career was moving forward.

But Mbatha has now revealed that her personal reality was far removed from the image of a young actress enjoying the rewards of a successful career.

She said she spent a prolonged period battling depression and anxiety, while also experiencing suicidal thoughts.

“I went through so many things like depression and anxiety, and I was about to take my life. I had been trying for a very long time,” she said.

‘I was supposed to be happy’

One of the most striking parts of Mbatha’s testimony was her admission that she struggled to understand why she felt so unhappy when, from the outside, her life appeared to be going well.

She described reaching a point of profound emotional exhaustion and feeling as though she simply wanted the pain to stop.

“I was at a point where I was just tired, and I just really wanted to end it all because I was supposed to be happy but I wasn’t happy,” she said.

Her words speak to an often-misunderstood reality of depression: success, money, career opportunities or public admiration do not automatically protect someone from mental-health struggles.

For Mbatha, the battle was happening while she was still building her name in the entertainment industry.

A two-year struggle

According to Mbatha, suicidal thoughts formed part of a mental-health battle that lasted for roughly two years.

She has now spoken publicly about having made several attempts to end her life, describing a period in which she felt overwhelmed by what she was experiencing.

The actress’s account has also highlighted how difficult it can be for people around someone to recognise that they are struggling when that person continues to function publicly.

Her story has therefore become about more than celebrity. It is also about the hidden battles people can carry while appearing perfectly fine to those around them.

Faith became her turning point

Mbatha says her Christian faith ultimately became central to the way she understood her experience.

She recalled what she described as a powerful spiritual encounter while she was alone in her apartment during one of her darkest moments.

“I saw Jesus in my apartment that night,” she said.

According to Mbatha, the experience gave her a sense that her suffering would eventually have meaning and that she would survive the difficult period.

She later connected her healing journey to her decision to be baptised.

“I just knew in my heart that after I get baptised I will no longer suffer with anxiety and depression,” she said.

Her baptism and a new chapter

Mbatha has previously spoken publicly about her baptism and her decision to devote herself more fully to Christianity.

In February, she shared her baptism experience on social media, describing it as one of the greatest decisions she had made and saying she had found what she described as “perfect love” in Christ Jesus.

Her latest testimony provides more context for that spiritual decision.

For Mbatha, faith became intertwined with her recovery and the new chapter she says she is living.

She now wants others facing their own struggles to know that they are not alone.

“Believe that Jesus is able to set you free from whatever you’re going through,” she said.

“If there’s anything that you’re struggling with, you can run to him, and he’ll save you from it because that is my testimony. That’s what he did for me.”

Turning pain into a testimony

Mbatha’s decision to speak about such an intensely personal part of her life has shifted the conversation around her public image.

For years, audiences have known her primarily through the characters she has portrayed. Now, she is allowing people to see the woman behind those roles and the struggles she says she survived away from the cameras.

Her story is ultimately one of survival, faith and a renewed sense of purpose.

While her recovery is rooted in her Christian beliefs, her openness also underscores the importance of taking mental-health struggles seriously and reaching out for support when life becomes overwhelming.

For someone who once felt she had reached the end of her road, Mbatha is now using her experience to tell others that their darkest chapter does not necessarily have to be their final one.
