A gathering of influential women from music, arts, culture, business and leadership has celebrated the legacy of veteran performer Mama Abigail Kubeka as part of the 2026 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz programme.
A celebration of women and legacy
Held on 30 August 2026, the Ignite Her Soul Experience brought together women from different generations and fields for an afternoon focused on storytelling, reflection, music and connection.
The event also provided a platform to honour Kubeka’s contribution to South Africa’s arts and cultural heritage, while creating space for conversations around the influence and resilience of women.
The programme included an opening circle, a Tribute Wall, spoken-word performances, music and discussions exploring the importance of preserving the stories and contributions of women who have helped shape the country’s cultural landscape.
Honouring Mama Abigail Kubeka
Among those sharing their reflections and talents were Mama Abigail Kubeka, Mama Barbara Masekela, Mantwa Chinoamadi, Yolisa Koza, Gabi Motuba, Maleh, Music Shed and Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu.
Through performances and personal reflections, the gathering connected the experiences of different generations while highlighting the enduring influence of women in South African culture.
The event positioned Kubeka’s legacy not simply as a celebration of one artist, but as part of a broader conversation about the women whose work, stories and resilience have helped shape the country.

Mantwa Chinoamadi, curator of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, said the response to the event reflected the importance of creating spaces where women could connect and celebrate one another.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of Ignite Her Soul. Through music, storytelling, reflection and meaningful connection, we created a powerful celebration of women and sisterhood, while honouring the remarkable legacy of Mama Abigail Kubeka,” said Chinoamadi.
Joy of Jazz returns in September
The Ignite Her Soul event forms part of the wider 2026 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz programme, which is set to take place on 25 and 26 September at the Sandton International Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
The festival has positioned itself as more than a music event, with the programme also placing emphasis on South Africa’s cultural and creative economy.
Tickets are priced at R1 150 for a Friday or Saturday general admission day pass, while a weekend pass covering both days costs R2 250.
Standard Bank cardholders can qualify for a discount of up to 15%, limited to two tickets per person when purchasing with a valid Standard Bank debit, cheque or credit card. The offer is subject to availability and applicable terms and conditions.
