After years of writing some of amapiano’s biggest hits for other artists, acclaimed songwriter Makhanj is finally stepping into the spotlight with the release of her debut album, Transkei, a deeply personal project that introduces listeners to her own story.
Set for release on 5 August 2026 across all major digital streaming platforms, Transkei marks a new chapter for the songwriter whose lyrics have helped shape South Africa’s globally celebrated amapiano sound. While her words have reached millions through other artists, this time she is sharing her own voice, experiences and identity.
The album explores themes of heritage, belonging and self-discovery, drawing inspiration from memory, culture and the places that have shaped her life. Rather than simply referencing a geographical location, the title Transkei represents the idea of home, encompassing roots, language, memories and the experiences that define people.
“Transkei is my way of introducing myself to the world, not only as an artist, but as a storyteller,” says Makhanj.
“For years I’ve expressed myself through music written for others. This album is different because it’s deeply personal. Every song carries a piece of my journey, my culture and the people who have shaped who I am. I hope listeners find pieces of themselves in these stories too.”
Beyond its music, the project also celebrates female collaboration. Makhanj assembled an all-women creative team to bring the album’s visual identity to life. The creative direction was led by multidisciplinary artist Tony Gum, while photographer Nondumiso Shange captured imagery reflecting the album’s themes of identity, heritage and belonging.
The collaboration, according to Makhanj, was an important part of telling the story behind the album.
“From the very beginning, I wanted Transkei to feel honest,” she explains. “Working with women who understood that vision allowed us to create something that feels true to who I am. Every image, every visual and every creative decision became part of telling the story of this album.”
At a time when audiences are increasingly drawn to authenticity, Transkei embraces storytelling over trends, celebrating African identity while reflecting on the shared experiences that connect people across cultures.
With the release of Transkei, Makhanj is not only making her debut as a recording artist but also stepping into a space she has spent years helping build, this time with her own voice at the forefront.
