His record company, New Money Gang Records, has more than 20 artists under its wing. After a X (former Twitter) scuffle with Nhlamulo “Nota” Baloyi, Themba “DJ Maphorisa” Sekowe has come forward to share proof of the millions he has paid to artists in royalties.
“If Sony could borrow me a billion, most definitely I will fix the industry,” he wrote on social media.
“Things I shouldn’t reveal, but fuck it, it feels good, and it’s the second time. I do this last time was R5m, R8m payouts, royalties from NMG music S/o to everyone been a part of NMG artists and producers. Thank you, definitely making more music with you guys, and I pay my taxes.”
The revelation started when the Manzi Nte hitmaker called out Nota on X (formerly Twitter), demanding payment for his contributions to Kwesta’s hit song ‘Ngud’, featuring Cassper Nyovest. Despite the song’s release on January 18, 2016, Sekowe claims he has yet to receive any royalties for his work. The dispute escalated when Nota celebrated the 1o-year anniversary of “Ngud” on X.
“Are you going to pay me my royalties? Yoh, I’ve been waiting 10 years.” Maphorisa responded.
Baloyi shifted the focus to issues surrounding sampling and publishing rights.
“You’re too young to forget you sampled ‘Camino de Sol’ and they claimed 100% of the publishing. Almost 10 years since ‘One Dance’ and you’re not even owed 1 cent on that. Add 49 cents, and I can explain for you as 50 told me; if they hate, then let them hate and watch the money pile up,” said Baloyi.
Maphorisa has since come forward to prove in bank statements how he pays for the royalties of artists with whom he has worked with.
In 2024, Maphorisa was reported to be owing Sony over R20million for an advance he took.
According to the report by ZiMoja, he took a loan of R20 million from the giant record label and is now falling behind on payments.
“He took an advance from the company, because he was sure that he was going to be able to pay it back.”
In the same year, Limpopo singer Lehlohonolo “Shebeshxt” Chauke currently awaiting trial in February, criticised DJ Maphorisa during a podcast with L-Tido for their collaboration on the song “Twerka and never receiving his royalties.
