It was in broad daylight when Elken Kenneth Mokoena (29) was allegedly seen digging up the graves of his father and grandfather at Masoyi outside Hazyview. He has since been arrested after members of the community reported the matter.
A woman informed the Masoyi Police Station that a man had dug up the two graves at the Swalala cemetery at around 1 pm. Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said police were shocked. The Visible Policing Unit tracked Mokoena down, arrested him, and confiscated the bones at his home. “This is an ongoing investigation and we cannot speculate on the motive.”
The suspect has not been mentally evaluated, which is not a matter of police but the courts,” he said. “He clearly broke the law when he allegedly dug up the graves. The law allows people to clean graves, erect tombstones, and put flowers on them. But not to dig them up.”
