She passed away on 7 January 2024 following a series of illnesses, including suffering a stroke, a battle with diabetes and Bronchitis. She was buried on 18 January at Westpark Cemetery. The family of veteran singer Winnie Khumalo was promised financial support by The Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture.

After a three month wait, the department has apologised for the delay caused by the new financial year starting in April. The department confirmed that funds were authorised on 15 April. “The payment had to be put on hold for the new financial year,” said Collen Hlatshwayo from the department.

The family received an email stating, the funds would be processed. “This is a formal email to confirm our telephone conversation and to inform you that all the documentation for the funds has been approved and authorised,” the communication reads. “The funds couldn’t be transferred in the last financial year and were placed in a queue for transfer at the beginning of the new financial year in April 2025,” the email reads.
