The Johannesburg water crisis seems be worsening. Rand Water announced they will be conducting maintenance on the Palmiet Pump station from May 2 to 16, 2025 and this may affect water supply in several Johannesburg Water systems including Sandton, Alexandra, South Hills, Midrand and Linksfield, leaving many residents without water for up to two weeks.

The City of Johannesburg is warning residents to prepare themselves for the upcoming inconvenience. “We urge residents to use water sparingly and to store enough water for their daily needs during the maintenance period,” said a spokesperson from the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Water and Sanitation.

Officials confirmed that the disruptions are necessary because of the upgrades due to Johannesburg’s water distribution system. Due to the nature of the work, it is expected to cause widespread water shortages but they have also shared that officials are working on measures to provide emergency water supplies to the areas that will be affected. “Johannesburg Water will make arrangements for alternative water supply. However, residents are encouraged to store water in preparation for the maintenance.”
