Former Premier Ace Magashule pleaded not guilty during his trial at Free State High Court with 17 co-accused. They are facing over 70 charges of fraud, corruption, theft &and money laundering dating back to a 2014 roofing contract awarded to Blackhead Consulting & Diamond Hill Trading. ActionSA has rejected his plea and “no sense of accountability.”

In a statement, ActionSA said he needed to be punished for his involvement. “We reiterate that justice must prevail. The justice system must demonstrate its ability to hold those responsible for grand-scale looting accountable,” they said in the statement. “This is not merely a matter of law, but of restoring dignity to communities forced to inhale asbestos and sleep with masks on a human rights violation that is inhumane and shameful.”

The political party said, “This scandal is not an isolated incident. As we have stated before, for the Free State to thrive, corruption must be decisively eradicated. The provincial departments that have long been treated as troughs for looting, fraud, and self-enrichment, rather than serving the people, must be overhauled to eliminate the rot.”

They went on to say, “The R255 million asbestos housing project should have long been completed, instead, it has become a symbol of greed and government failure. The health hazards created by the continued presence of asbestos in people’s homes are unacceptable, and the ongoing suffering is proof of a justice system that moves too slowly to defend the most vulnerable. We call for urgent accountability, decisive prosecutions, and the full implementation of the Zondo Commission’s recommendations. The Free State cannot heal while those who inflicted pain continue to evade justice.”
