Speaking about this initiative, transgender activist Yaya Mavundla said she believes that all love deserves to be celebrated and afforded. “When I met my partner, I wanted the work to know that I’m in love, but the fear of what that will come with influenced a decision not to, and I know so many couples in our community feels like that and I think such initiatives are important to affirm us that we are also deserving of love, we are also deserving to be free with who we love anytime, anywhere.”

She further shared how the couple she recently met was even a big inspiration for this picnic. “I recently met an openly gay couple back home in Untunjambili, Kranskop in KwaZulu-Natal, and they have been together for 6 years. Their love is celebrated by the community and that truly warmed my hear to see that happening in the community I grew up in where there was no representation of the LGBTIQ+ community,” said Mavundla who says this is proof that LGBTQ+ people and relationships exist in every part of the world.
