Durban, 20 July 2024 – The KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority announced the winners of the 2024 Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards during film month, at a grand event hosted at the iconic Playhouse in Durban on Saturday, 20 July. This year’s compelling theme of “Sibonakude Kumabonakude ne-Bioscope, ‘Beyond Imagination, highlights the evolution of KZN film and locations, celebrating its impact and contribution. The awards celebrated the finest talents in South African film and television, focusing on KwaZulu-Natal. The red carpet was a stunning display of fashion, with attendees showcasing futuristic designs inspired by African culture.

Hosted by the charismatic Nomalanga Shozi alongside sassy Nokwazi, the isiZulu-speaking virtual assistant who entertained both the host and guests, the event highlighted the fast-paced and ever-changing world of technology. The inclusion of Nokwazi, with the award-winning Lerato Mvelase behind the voice, showcased how technology can be harnessed to celebrate the visual and cultural diversity of KwaZulu-Natal. This highlights how technology and humans can collaborate to visually tell stories that bring the essence of KZN to the forefront.

The gala event welcomed esteemed guests, including government officials, industry professionals, and renowned film and TV contributors across the continent, all gathered to honour the legacy of Simon Mabhunu Sabela. The 2024 Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and TV Awards winners were unveiled in a dazzling ceremony filled with electrifying performances, heartfelt speeches, and expressions of gratitude, celebrating the extraordinary talent within KwaZulu-Natal’s film and television sector.

These awards serve as a testament to our immense talent in KwaZulu-Natal and our filmmakers and television professionals’ incredible impact. Winners were announced in various categories, each representing the pinnacle of excellence in their respective fields. Household names from the 2024 Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards include Thembinkosi Mthembu (Best Actor – TV), Deli Malinga (Best Actress – TV), Masoja Msiza (Best Actor – Film), Jo-Anne Reyneke(Best Actress – Film), Dr Mbongeni Ngema (Best Supporting Actor), Dr Thembi Mtshali (Best Supporting Actress – Film), Melusi Yeni (Best Supporting Actor – TV). The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Cynthia Shange.

In response to the growing popularity of reality shows in KZN and their impact on the local industry, KZN Tourism and Film Authority introduced an innovative public participation category. This new category invited the general public to engage in the nomination and judging process through a social media voting system, recognising audience favourites. The Best Reality Show award went to KwaNjomane.

The awards paid tribute to KZN the late Dr. Mbongeni Ngema and others who have departed and left an indelible mark on the South African TV and film industry. Their enduring legacies continue to inspire and shape the future of our local entertainment landscape.
