The legendary Thandiswa releases her first single, “Kulungile,” from her forthcoming album, Sankofa.

Kulungile is produced by one of South Africa’s best producers, and multiple award-winning jazz superstars, Nduduzo Makhathini. “Kulungile is a 5+ minute odyssey for a reason! I’m healing wounds. We must travel the entire scope of the song. Every note, every pause, and every change is essential as the song talks to the inner emotions,” said Thandiswa.

Sankofa is Thandiswa’s fourth studio album, due for release on May 10, 2024. Sankofa is a Ghanaian Twi word that means ‘to go back and fetch what has been left behind.

The making of this work has embodied that idea. Recorded in Johannesburg, Dakar, and New York, the album combines archival Xhosa samples (which were sourced from the International Library of African Music at Rhodes University), jazz, and West African music.

It includes songs produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, Chris Bruce, Nduduzo Makhathini, Tendai Shoko, and Thandiswa. It features a collaboration with Thandi Ntuli.
