Winning the battle over Prostate Cancer
Veteran actor, Dr. Jerry Mofokeng has been on our television screens for many years and featured in several critically acclaimed films such as; Cry the beloved country, Lord of War, Mandela and de Klerk and the 2005 Academy award-winning film Tsotsi.
He currently plays a role on etv’s highest watched show – Scandal! as Neo Mokgethi, a feared infamous gangster and a teddy bear of a Grandfather.
Neo Mokgethi is a street-wise, ex-gangster who should not be crossed. He’s a tough, straight-talking, confident man whose body is starting to betray him by exposing his age and vulnerabilities. He has left the world of crime behind him but his moral code is flexible at best. He finds himself trying to live a straight and narrow life but often makes choices that fall into the grey area between right and wrong.
“I personally approached the Scandal production and asked to use this platform to tell my story because I believe that as actors, people listen to us. It doesn’t help to keep secrets about the real-life journey that we go through,” says Dr Jerry.
Recently, Dr Jeffrey Mofokeng was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and had a long battle with it and today he tells his story through his character – Neo Mokgethi. Neo is diagnosed with Prostate Cancer but will he do the sensible thing and embrace treatment? He has an unlikely ally in his grandson Tibi, who shows him that it is a battle that can be won.
“I think this story will educate and enlighten a lot of men and women and telling this story through the character of Neo Mokgethi, the ex-gangster and television powerhouse is a plus. The universe has also aligned by enabling us to air this story on Prostate Cancer Awareness Month”, says Scandal! Creative Producer, Grace Mahlaba.
