If you had to describe SinChui designs, the words quirky and futuristic would undoubtedly pop up. The 29-year-old Robyn Agulhas, a go-getter from Goodwood, Cape Town birthed the innovation-driven, high fashion streetwear brand in 2019, in perfect time to earn her a seat at the table as one of the designers of the A-Grade capsule collection. While on the Chivas Venture programme, she has her eye on the future and no time to look back.

Ten people, ten colours

Robyn’s particular brand of fashion is inspired by an eccentric blend of technology, Japanese fashion, anime and art, Hip Hop culture and, if couldn’t get any more ”far-out”, her grandmother’s vintage Sixties style. Robyn grew up watching her grandmother behind a sewing machine and taking in nostalgic images of her in Sixties fashion in the streets of District Six. What piqued her interest most while growing up was watching anime and reading up on the evolution of technology in Tokyo. Her love of technology and textiles were later married to create the third year Graduate Collection that later became her brand, SinChui.

Fall seven times, get up eight

As every notable success story includes the setback that sets up the hero’s comeback, Robyn failed her Textile Technology studies and had to repeat the year. The fierce and determined modern woman she is, Robyn decided to occupy her time by enrolling in a short course at a fashion school and within 10 minutes of her being there to apply, she was awarded the Fashion Design bursary that changed her life. Her creative spark grew into a towering inferno and thus, her streetwear aesthetic was born.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Press fast forward, Robyn is one of four apprentices under Zaid Osman in the creation of the A-Grade nine-piece capsule collection that will contribute to growing the local fashion and textile industry. Since joining the Chivas Venture programme, Robyn has been motivated to see her vision of making a creative difference in communities through SinChui. She brings a nostalgic vibe from school days into the capsule collection, which is something that everyone can relate to.

There’s an old Japanese quote that goes “Vision without action is a daydream”. It is clear that Robyn Agulhas is in motion and there’s very little that can stop her in the pursuit of her big, audacious dreams.
