A 53-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe, Cullinan, will remain behind bars after abandoning his bail application.
The accused appeared before the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of murder. His case was postponed to 27 October for further investigations.
Water fight ends in tragedy
The case stems from an incident on 1 September in Refilwe Extension 3, where a group of young people had gathered to mark Spring Day by splashing water on one another and passing pedestrians.
According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the accused was allegedly walking past when members of the group attempted to pour water over him.
“He allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the deceased. The deceased was taken to a local clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries,” Mahanjana said.
Nyathi, who was 21, was subsequently identified as the victim.
The incident has cast a dark shadow over a Spring Day tradition that has historically involved young people splashing water as they welcome the start of spring.
Suspect arrested after community confrontation
Following the alleged stabbing, the 53-year-old suspect was reportedly apprehended by members of the community a short distance from the scene.
He was allegedly assaulted before police arrived. The suspect was taken to Ekangala Hospital for medical treatment and was subsequently placed under arrest.
Police have warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi previously urged members of the public to allow law enforcement agencies to deal with criminal cases through the proper legal channels.
“The police urge members of the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to allow the police to deal with criminal incidents through lawful processes,” Nevhuhulwi said.
Murder case continues
The accused’s decision to abandon his bail application means he will remain in custody while investigators continue working on the case.
The NPA has not disclosed his identity at this stage.
The matter has now been postponed to 27 October for further investigations. The accused remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
